Out and about.
I went outside, where it was cold and rainy, because I’m a dumbass.
(Let’s also pretend that this is a build kit post, as I haven’t been able to do much with finals recently, but I had this laying around and I felt weird not posting for so long so here it is.)

I have a silly thing to confess. When I was a kid and saw the 08th MS Team opening, knowing literally nothing about Gundam I assumed it was a series about Vietnam but with Mechs. Especially that scene where the Gundam marches through the river while a speedboat passes by.
I mean, it's totally easy to see how you'd get that going in blind, it was basically built from the ground up to be a Vietnam allegory with the guerilla warfare, civilian population embedded troops, and rain forest locale. 👍

I've been playing some Super Robot Wars GC lately. You can capture enemy units, which is pretty neat.

List of Gundam’s I’ve watched so far, least favorite to favorite (warning, may be controversial? idk)
Stardust Memory - I’m going to be honest, I watched this one but did not super follow it. Maybe I should try again, it just didn’t feel that interesting to me for some reason. Like it was a short series, and I didn’t get attached enough to the characters in that short time, and it is only really setting up stuff from Zeta Gundam that I already knew about so I didn’t particularly care about it. idk
ZZ Gundam - I’m currently halfway through this one, and it is growing on me, but the front half is silly in a not fun way for me. Feels aimed at a markedly younger audience then Zeta, which maybe it was but its losing me for that. Also the lack of a dub means I can’t really work on Gunpla/play videogames while watching which makes it less engaging for my ADHD. I think the reuse of Zeta suits with entirely new characters feels a bit like a cheap reboot. My understanding is that like, Char and a lot of the other cast was meant to return but because Char’s Counterattack got approval all of the characters/actors got saved for that project, so we ended up with a new cast for ZZ, but I’m just not feeling them/their stories feel like childlike rehashes of previous stuff largely. Mobile Suit Gundam - The original gundam feels like the baseline. I enjoyed it, I know conceptually it had more going on then just a children’s show about robots fighting, but it didn’t really hook me properly. I ended up caring about its cast more when watching other stuff with them in it then when I watched MSG. Wasn’t bad by any means, but just the absolute neutral of mecha experiences imo. 8th MS Team - I liked it. Felt decidedly more adult then the mainline series, wasn’t my favorite cast of characters but it was fun and interesting at the same time.
Zeta Gundam - I found it more compelling then MSG on the individual character basis, but I think its overall message stumbled in a few places and dove headfirst into misogyny in others. Despite that and some repetitive storylines with Cybernewtypes, I found I ended up liking the cast of Zeta a whole lot, and I definitely thought the look of the suits in Zeta were an improvement over the originals. Zeta itself was not my favorite, but the MK II, Hyaku Shiki, and many of the other suits were super cool.
Gundam The Origin - Beautifully animated, wonderfully fleshes out the characters in a way that made them much more compelling to me then MSG did on its own.
Iron Blooded Orphans - Second series I watched, before any UC stuff. It was great, the mechs were cool, the story was compelling and at the surface scratched a lot of itches I look for in sci-fi in general, in many ways more so then any other Gundam series. The only reason it isn’t higher up is that the other series just connected with me more in ways I didn’t expect.
War in the Pocket - Loved it, a smaller, microscopic view of war and its horrors, while also having some cool robot action. I loved the Alex, I def want its MG.
00 Gundam - It was the first gundam series I watched, and got me back into mecha after not really watching much anime at all since highschool. The suits are cool, the characters and story arc compelling. I do need to do a rewatch though, as my opinion of it may be more about how cool it was after not watching anything like it in awhile and how much was its actual quality, but I do think it was pretty great.
Gundam Thunderbolt - The perfect combination of flashy animation, compelling characters, and cool suits. Full Armor Gundam is my favorite UC suit so far. Honorable Mention: Witch from Mercury I’m not even done with whats out yet, and half of it hasn’t been released, but I’m loving it so far. The designs are amazing, the characters compelling, but there isn’t a ton I could say about it that I haven’t said about other series already.

I’m loving the general aesthetic of the show so far. The look of these big chunky mechs trudging through dense foliage is really striking

Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island (a movie adaptation of Episode 15), around about late October 0079UC. This is set in the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin timeline, and thus the White Base has already visited Jaburo and all members are officially part of the Earth Federation Forces. The Guntank is replaced by a second Guncannon, Sleggar is present, and Cucuruz Doan's Island is relocated to the Canary Islands rather than Japan, although the event still precedes Operation Odessa.
Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) Episodes 16-25 (up to early November 0079UC)
Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team Episodes 1-11 (October 6th 0079UC up to around 15th November 0079. Starts after 0079 Episode 10 (Garma's death), and finishes sometime after the battle of Odessa during the Zeon Asian Ground Forces retreat)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance (2024), runs from November 6th until around about the end of that week, shortly after Operation Odessa and the evacuation of the Zeon Eastern European and Asian Ground Forces. The timeline is a little sketchy as Yuri Kellerne appears in both this and 08th MS Team, but dies in the latter, but the series definitely ends by at most two days after 8th to 9th November and Operation Odessa in Episode 25 of Mobile Suit Gundam (1979).
Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO 2: The Gravity Front Episodes (2008) Episode 3: Odessa, Storm of Steel!, runs from 8th to 9th November 0079UC, concurrently with Operation Odessa in Episode 25 of Mobile Suit Gundam (1979).
Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War (2004) Episode 3: Dance of the Orbital Ghosts, runs from 24th October to 11th November 0079UC.
Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) Episodes 25-35 occur from around November of 0079UC up until the start of December, although there aren't many exact dates for when exactly in the year each episode takes place, although The Battle of Solomon in Episode 35 takes place on 24th December 0079 UC).
Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079 (2006) Episode 1: In the Skies of Jaburo I Saw the Sea, happens from 3rd to 7th December 0079UC, sometime after 0079 Episode 30.
Gundam 0080 War in The Pocket (1989) runs from around December 9th 0079UC up until around 12th to 25th December 0079UC.
Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079 (2006) Episode 2: Cross the Path of Light, happens from 28th to 30th December 0079UC.
Final few episodes (around 36/37 until 43) of Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) definitively happen on December 30th and 31st 0079UC, as this is when the Battle of A Bao Qu occurs in canon.
Peace treaty with Zeon signed on 1st January 0080UC.
Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079 (2006) Episode 3: Spirits Returning to the Cries of Thunder, happens from 31st December 0079UC until 1st January 0080UC.

Gundam UC Watch Check In
Gundam, Universal Century, I may not fully comprehend you sometimes. But I understand why this series is very beloved. Guess that means I need to pick up a gunpla and display it next to my zoids. Anyways I might have committed a sin here and skipped ZZ and put aside Char's Counter Attack for a later watch. But I must say, I still was able to follow Gundam Unicorn and I really did like it.
Favorite Series: Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096. Favorite Opening Song: Mobile Suit Gundam 8th MS Team. Favorite Ending Song: Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096. Favorite Gundam: Unicorn. Favorite Mobile Suit: MS-06S Char's Zaku II Favorite Protagonist: Banagher Links. Favorite Antagonist: Char Aznable. Character I Will Defend: Bright Noa. Character I Would Throw Off A Cliff: Martha Vist Carbrine. Least Favorite Protagonist: Kamille. Least Favorite Antagonist: Angelo Sauper. And if you don't like my silly opinion, too bad. Also yes I will watch Hathway movie, heard good things about it. Also the more modern style that we see in unicorn, basically modern era 80s/90s animation style? Gods I think that is my favorite anime style thus far. Also to mention, currently watching MSG Build Fighters with a bunch of cool peeps online. And what a fun little series that confuses the fuck out of me on the rules in their tournaments.
#suffice to say I started watching Gundam again after Dungeon Meshi ended#I still need to finish a few things before I go check out the other timelines#And yeah I'll try not to watch anything out of order too badly but I really wanted to watch Unicorn#mobile suit gundam#ld speaks
